The fourth and fifth grade girls from Girl Scout Troop #9338 are working on the highest award for their junior division: the Bronze Award.
A Bronze Award is given when the girls of a troop come together and decide on a project that impacts the community or the world of Girl Scouts. The troop decided to work with the Big Bend Wildlife Sanctuary for the Take Action Project portion of their Junior Journey, which has different requirements for the Bronze Award.
“The girls’ objective is to raise awareness about the sanctuary and host a supply drive for them,” said Girl Scout mom and volunteer Sandra DeTora.
On Saturday, August 8, the young ladies from Troop #9338 will be at Tractor Supply in Enterprise informing the public about the sanctuary and asking for donations to help the sanctuary care for the animals it rehabilitates.

The troop will be at Tractor Supply from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., and will be offering informative bookmarks on the sanctuary for anyone that stops by. The girls are also collecting things such as small boxes, newspapers, bottle tops, pillowcases and old towels. Each of these items will go towards helping sustain the animals in need at the sanctuary, like newspapers for cage liners and old towels for Bobcat bedding.
After seeing and meeting the animals at a Fabulous Fourth Friday downtown, DeTora said the girls knew they wanted to help the sanctuary.
“The girls there saw the animals and learned about Big Bend and immediately wanted to help,” DeTore said. ”They’re so excited for this. They’re always excited to be around the animals.”
The education animals from the Big Bend Wildlife Sanctuary will be in attendance for a portion of the supply drive to help people understand the animals and what the sanctuary does.
Other larger items will be available to purchase at Tractor Supply, as well as a donation jar for anyone interested in donating money for the sanctuary.
“Everyone we’ve talked to had no idea the sanctuary was there, so every time we tell someone they’re learning,” DeTora said. “Now they’ll know what to do with injured animals or where to send supplies.”
For anyone interested in helping the Girl Scouts of Troop #9338 receive their Bronze Award, head out to Tractor Supply on Saturday.
“We’re so appreciative of Tractor Supply for helping us and letting us use their parking lot and area on a Saturday,” DeTora said.
