Charles Smith Walsh, age 93 of Knoxville, Tennessee and formerly of Eufaula, Fairhope, and Abbeville, Alabama, passed away July 5, 2020. Mr. Walsh received a BS in Botany and a MS in Forestry from Auburn University. He was the second recipient of a master's degree in Forestry from Auburn. He was a Navy veteran of both WWII and the Korean War. He served as a gunner in patrol planes and later as a radio operator aboard ships. For many years he was a Boy Scoutmaster and positively influenced a generation of young men in Abbeville in that role. In 1962 he received the Abbeville Lions Club 1962 Outstanding Community Service Award. His forestry career included many years in timber procurement in southeastern Alabama and later as Vice President of Larson & McGowin, Inc. Forest Management Company of Mobile. He was a past member of the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and the former Chairman of the Alabama Forestry Commission. He received the Award of Excellence from the SAF in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in the practice of forestry. He also received the Auburn University School of Forestry Outstanding Alumnus Award. He was the author of numerous professional articles and was a published author of short stories and poems about his early days in south Alabama. He was passionate about Auburn University and especially the football program. He was known as a gentle and honest man with a high sense of integrity who adored his family and friends. His greatest pleasures came from being a positive influence and role model for his sons, grandchildren, and numerous greatgrandchildren. Mr. Walsh was born in McKenzie, Alabama, June 20, 1927, the son of William Leonard and Helen Scott Walsh. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers Bill and Dick, and his sweetheart and wife of 60 years, Madolyn Brown Walsh. Survivors include sons Chuck (Cathy) and Steve (Debbie), six grandchildren - Stephanie Walsh Franklin, Melissa Walsh Hudson, Charlie Walsh, Heather Walsh, and Ben Walsh - in addition to 13 great grandchildren. Funeral Services for Mr. Walsh will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2020, in the Chapman Funeral Home Chapel and the burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery with Chapman Funeral Home directing. The visitation for Mr. Walsh will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2020, from 6 until 8 P.M. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Washington Street United Methodist Church in Eufaula.
